Kerry James Marshall, Thelma Golden and Fred Moten are among the top 10 of the 17th edition of ArtReview’s Power 100 list. Moten made it for the first time on the list of the most powerful persons in the art world, joined by the artists Adrian Piper and John Akomfrah as well as cultural producer Simon Njami.
ArtReview’s annual list of the world’s most influential artists, curators, gallerists, and other powerful people brings some important new names in the ranking. Its not just surprising that for the first time a entire movement—#MeToo—made it into the list, but three Black artists and cultural producers are among the top 10.
Kerry James Marshall made it second after German art dealer and gallery owner David Zwirner, who represents him as an artist. Marshall received some high recognition earlier this year, when his painting Past Times became the most expensive work by an African American artist to sell at auction at Sotheby’s.
Thelma Golden is not new to the list neither the top ten, the Director and Chief Curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem kept her spot 8. But several other figures made it for the first-time in 2018. So poet and theorist Fred Moten, who comes in at number 10, conceptual aritst and philosopher Adrian Piper on spot 49, independent curator and writer Simon Njami came in 65 and artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah made it on spot 94.
Already known most powerful artists and cultural producers from African persepctives on the list are David Hammons, Theaster Gates, Kara Walker, William Kentdrige, Kader Attia, Donna Haraway, Koyo Kouoh and Arthur Jafa.
